More than 1,000 Mavericks Earn Alumnus Status

CMU gets ready to honor 1,142 graduates earning 1,242 degrees or certificates

Thousands of family members, friends, loved ones and supporters will gather at Stocker Stadium on Saturday, May 21, to honor the Colorado Mesa University Spring 2022 graduating class.

Guests and soon-to-be alumni will have the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments with Maverick alumnus and Colorado Department of Higher Education Chief Education Equity Officer Roberto Montoya, PhD, as he gives the keynote address for the 1,142 graduates earning 1,242 degrees or certificates. Montoya, a political science major, was the first elected Latino student body president in university history.

“I think back to my time here and how imperative and instrumental it was in terms of finding myself, finding my call to activism, and wanting to make space and place better for folks, and that happened here,” said Montoya.

CMU continues to lead Colorado as a first-generation student institution, and will close out another semester celebrating the fact that nearly 50% of the 2022 graduating class will be the first in their family to do so.

The celebration will be split into two ceremonies, one at 8am and the other at 11am. For more day-of-details, visit nihonnkazamidori.com/commencement.
